Thursday, October 19, 2006 The tormented soul of the gay conservative  Andrew Sullivan is a journalist, author, blogger and former editor of The New Republic. Most liberals (particularly gay liberals) regard him with a mixture of revulsion and fascination, unable to take their eyes off this exotic gay-brid. Belonging to the family "Conservative," the genus "Republican," and the species "Log Cabin," Sullivan is a curiosity in that cheerleading-against-ones-own-best-interest sort of way. My office neighbor, Jeff, listened to an MPR interview with Sullivan and then sent me this e-mail and letter to Sullivan. He said I could share it with you. Here it is: This morning I heard Andrew Sullivan, the gay conservative blogger, on MPR. Whether or not you agree with his politics, he is without question a very smart man. He’s recently written a book where he takes the Bush administration to task. It was so refreshing to hear from, for a change, an actual conservative republican, rather than a religious whack job. It was also incredibly frustrating. This is the email I sent to his site. Thought you might enjoy. Hi Andrew, I heard you on Minnesota Public Radio this morning. What a fascinating conversation. I can’t wait to read your book [The Conservative Soul]. Finally a conservative who makes sense. You’re right on the money about so many things. I’m glad the conservative movement has you as a spokesperson. I also have to say, I hold you, and all true conservative/non-religious republicans responsible for the mess we’re in. You were taken in. You were duped. You fell for the Bush zealotry. And you let these nuts steal your party—with disastrous results. It has always been so obvious, for years and years, that these overly-hawkish religious extremists were trouble. Big trouble. How could you not see it? I’m no expert, but even I could see that the likelihood of an impoverished country like Iraq building an undetectable, state-of-the-art, James Bondian underground weapons cache under the noses of the entire world was at best doubtful and at worst absolutely ridiculous. The list of red flags is very long—institutionalized homophobia, out of control spending, foreign aid tied to birth control, enmeshed church and state. I could go on and on and on. All the signs were there. You missed them. About half the country did not, in 2000 and 2004. If just a few of you had woken up just a wee bit earlier we might not be in the mess we’re in now. So yes, thank you, thank you, thank you for finally waking up— for finally bringing true, smart, conservative discourse back to the table. I just hope it’s not too late.
